Which vehicle awning suits my car, van, or SUV? – The buying guide

Which vehicle awning suits my car, van, or SUV? – The buying guide

A vehicle awning transforms any pitch into a shady, weather-protected outdoor area in seconds. But which design, size, and mounting method suits your car, van, or SUV? This buying guide will help you make the right choice in just a few minutes.

Overview of Awning Types

270° Awning – Maximum All-Round Shade

The 270° awning encloses the rear of the vehicle and one entire side. Ideal for campers and overlanders who want plenty of space and shade. It is particularly suitable for vans, buses, and off-road vehicles with a sturdy roof rack.

Straight Side & 180° Awning – The All-Rounder

A straight side awning or 180° awning extends along the side of the vehicle – quickly deployed, compactly stowed, and the classic choice for weekend camping and station wagons.

Rear Awning – Shade at the Tailgate

The rear awning protects the area behind the open tailgate – perfect for SUVs, station wagons, and panel vans if you want to cook or change clothes at the rear.

Freestanding Awning – Independent of the Vehicle

A freestanding awning stands on its own supports and remains standing even when you drive away. The most flexible solution for permanent pitches and base camps.

Which Awning Suits Which Vehicle?

Vehicle Type Recommendation
Station Wagon & SUV Straight side awning or rear awning – lightweight, aerodynamic, easy to mount
Van, Bus & Panel Van (e.g., VW California, T5/T6) 270° or 180° awning for generous all-round shade
Off-road Vehicle & Overlander Robust 270° awning, preferably with a hard shell for off-road use
Motorhome & Permanent Pitch Freestanding awning or large straight awning from 4 m

Choosing the Right Size

As a rule of thumb: The awning should be about as long as the vehicle side to be shaded. Choose the length to match your vehicle:

  • 1.4 m – compact, for the rear area and small vehicles
  • 2.0 m – the all-rounder for most vans and SUVs
  • 2.5 m – plenty of shade for buses & campers
  • 4.0 m – maximum area for motorhomes and permanent pitches

Mounting: Railing, Roof Rack, or Adapter?

Vehicle awnings are attached to the side of the vehicle – depending on the vehicle, via an existing roof railing, a roof rack, or a suitable adapter rail. When buying, ensure that the bracket and vehicle match; if in doubt, we will help you choose the right brackets. We recommend two people and about 20 minutes for assembly.

Short recommendation: Do you want a lot of shade and drive a van or SUV? Then a 270° awning in 2.0–2.5 m is the best choice. For station wagons and SUVs with occasional use, a straight side awning in 2.0 m is sufficient.
